Passive PoE

FAQ about Passive Power over Ethernet

1. How does the Power over Ethernet work?

Please, see the information page about PoE.

2. What is the difference between Passive PoE and Active PoE?

Active PoE has active components inside and it is able to transfer power up to 100 metres. Passive PoE uses free wires in the Ethernet cable and sends the equipments power along them to the far end. Passive PoEs range is about 30 to 40 metres / 100-130 ft that covers the needs of up to 90% of users according to our statisitics.

3. What kind of devices/APs are suitable for using Passive PoE?

OvisLink, D-Link, Linksys, Wline, Bufallo WHR-HP-G54,etc..

4. What kind of voltage can Passive PoE handle?

It is a passive component which means that any kind of voltage is available. Passive PoE does not come with any power supply. It uses the power supply from AP.

5. What is the maximum distance for using Passive PoE?

The distance that Passive PoE can transfer power depends on the device/AP and the type of cable. General range for using it is about 30 to 40 meters / 100-130 ft.

6. Does Passive PoE need any power supply?

It does not need any additional power supply. Passive PoE uses the power supply from AP.

7. What kind of connector does Passive PoE use?

It uses DC 5,5 x 2,1 mm.

8. Is it possible to connect Passive PoE to IP camera or VoIP phone?

Yes, it is. Passive PoE works with IP camera and IP telephone but it is reccomended to check if the conector is DC 5,5 x 2,1 mm before using.

9. What is the maximum voltage of powered equipment connected by Passive Power over Ethernet?

The devices can be supplied standardly up to 50V. In case of higher voltage we reccomend to consalt using Passive PoE with us.

10. Is Passive Power over Ethernet defined by standard IEEE 802.3af?

No, it is not. Passive PoE is not an active component. Therefore it does not contain any active elements.

11. Does Passive PoE package include power adapter?

No, it does not. You can use power adapter from the package os powered device (AP, IP camera, etc.).
